7 Car Essentials That Every Service Dog Handler Needs

When you have a service dog, your vehicle isn’t just for transportation—it’s a mobile home base. Whether you’re running errands, heading to appointments, or road-tripping for a weekend getaway, it pays to be prepared. These service dog car essentials are the items I always keep in the car to make sure my dog stays safe, comfortable, and ready to work, even when plans change or things get messy.

1. A Backup Harness
My dog usually leaves the house in her harness, but I like to keep a spare in the car just in case. If we make an unexpected stop and I’ve forgotten her working gear (yes, it happens), this one saves the day. It’s affordable, comfortable, and has enough space for a basic patch or two.
2. Backup Booties
On hot days, she leaves the house in her Ruffwear booties, but every now and then, we lose a shoe in the wild, or we miscalculate how hot the pavement is and just leave the house without them. These budget booties are a great backup pair to keep in the car.
3. A Dog Seatbelt
A dog seatbelt isn’t the most exciting piece of gear, but it’s one of the most important. It helps keep your service dog safe during sudden stops or accidents, and prevents them from flying into the front seat and injuring you or themselves.
The Kurgo seatbelt is my go-to because it’s one of the few crash-tested options when paired with the Kurgo harness. But it still works great as a standalone safety option when attached to any harness.
Important: Always attach a seatbelt to a harness, never a collar.
4. Collapsible Water Bowl
While I keep an insulated dog water bottle in my bag most of the time, I always leave a collapsible water bowl in the car, just in case we’re out longer than expected and she finishes the water in her bottle, or I forget the bottle. This bowl has saved us more than once.
5. Wipes
I always keep a small pack of unscented wipes in my bag because dogs are living (sometimes messy) beings, but I like to stash an extra pack in the car, just in case my main supply runs low.
6. Foldable Mat
Restaurant floors, waiting rooms—they’re not exactly clean or comfortable. Your service dog is working hard, and they deserve a soft, clean place to lay while on the job. I keep a cut Pilates mat in the car that folds or rolls up easily and fits in the backseat or trunk.
7. Leash Sleeves
Sometimes I’m just running into a gas station or grabbing a last-minute item from the grocery store. If my dog isn’t in full gear, it can feel awkward walking around with a “naked” dog, even if the law is on our side, which is why I keep “Service Dog” leash sleeves in the car. They’re a quick and easy way to add visual identification to my dog.
